It is that time of the year when many people pay money for the joy of being scared. They will get in a car and drive to the nearest haunted house or a haunted corn maze so someone with fake blood, a pitchfork, and a scary mask can scare them. We may like to be terrified this time of the year by ghosts, goblins, and monsters, but we don't want to be frightened by spiders!

If spiders are scaring you as you lay in bed or jumping on you while you work in the garage, or you fear they are lurking in the shadows, you need the Montgomery County pest control team from M.A.D. Exterminators. Since the days of Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), we have been eliminating spiders in houses.

How To Identify The Two Dangerous Spiders Found In The Area

The two venomous spiders in Pennsylvania are black widow spiders and brown recluse spiders. Although they look similar to other spiders, these are distinguishing features of each:

  • Black widow spiders have a 1 1/2 to 1 3/8 inch black, shiny round body with two red triangle-like markings on the abdomen underside creating an hourglass shape. Like all spiders, they have eight legs and multiple eyes. They create messy, irregular webs near the floor in dry, dark places.
  • Brown recluse spiders have a 1/4 to 1/2 inch brown round body with a violin shape darker marking on their back (dorsum). Like the black widow spiders, they have eight legs and multiple eyes. They spin irregular webs in secluded areas like garages, attics, and basements.

Both spider species avoid human contact but will bite if threatened or cornered.

The Symptoms Of A Dangerous Spider's Bite

Unlike other spiders and spider bites, black widow and brown recluse bites cause symptoms that can sometimes be severe. Female black widows are most likely to bite when protecting their nest, and if they bite, the pain is immediate and escalates over the next hour to three hours. In addition to the pain, other symptoms such as increased blood pressure, sweating, muscle aches, and nausea accompany the discomfort at the bite site. Although death is rarely the result of a black widow spider bite, one should seek medication attention immediately.

Although smaller than a black widow, the venom from a brown recluse spider packs a powerful punch. Unlike a black widow bite, the onset of pain at the bite site may take six to eight hours. Accompanying the pain is a small blister and symptoms of restlessness, difficulty sleeping, and fever. The venom of a brown recluse eats away the tissue at the wound location and may create an ulcer. The ulcer can extend to the bone if left untreated and create a scar.
